abstract = {Games have been used in civic participation (Lerner, 2014) and civic learning (Raphael et al. 2010). Building on the idea of using games for participation, democracy and collaboration, we propose approaching games as tools for convivial learning. First introduced by Illich (1973), the concept of conviviality envisions a society characterised by collaboration and self-determination, underpinned by tools that encourage joyful interaction, creativity and human agency through control over the tools. We believe that games as convivial tools could help bring forth creativity and mutual learning about civic processes and desirable futures. Yet, games' nature as rigid systems of rules (Salen \& Zimmerman, 2010) seems potentially at odds with positioning them as tools promoting agency. We propose to use the tension arising between rigidity and agency as starting point for exploring game design strategies for convivial games through research-through-design. We ask how games for thinking about the future may be designed that allow players to exercise control over their own experience, and to what effect. Inspired by the concept of critical play (Flanagan, 2009; Grace, 2014) and building on the distinction between narrative and mechanics as key constituting game elements, we have designed two distinct games for collaboratively engaging with the future. The first, Narrate, focuses on letting players invent their own narrative, whilst the second game Remix allows for experimentation with game rules and mechanics. We present the design process for each game and contrast the different approaches taken. Each game was tested by two groups and analysed in regards to its capacity to bring forth conviviality, creativity and collaboration. The paper compares and provides a discussion on how suitable the two chosen strategies of experimenting with narrative or mechanics are for (1) facilitating thinking and learning about shared futures, and (2) supporting player agency and bringing forth convivial interactions.},

abstract = {Education for Sustainable Development requires raising individuals' awareness of problems relevant to the environment. We designed a Generative Toolkit that supports industrial design students carrying out a Speculative Design task and through this process initiates greater problem awareness of low metal recycling rates. abstract="An intergenerational just distribution of metals is considered the basis for sustainable development. However, metal dissipation caused by the living generation when recycling their end-of-life products contradicts this ideal. To ensure that designers of the living generation are adequately equipped for a transition towards sustainable futures, this paper explores potentials and criteria of educational instruments for the metal selection process to assist students designing products with lowest dissipative losses. It provides insights from user studies in which initial prototypes were tested as a basis for discussion with design professionals. The paper shows that potential of future instruments is generally recognized. However, their practicality is to be tested in further research, also with design students using specific projects.",

abstract="Creativity is a key component in promoting diversity in thinking about the future. Hence, it is important for participation in shaping it. Games have been used in the past to encourage creativity and to tackle serious topics in playful ways, both inside and outside of educational contexts. We explore how games can combine interactive narration with creative scaffolding to encourage collective creative thinking about the future. Following a research-through-design approach, we developed ``Tales from the Future'': a board game based on the structure of ``choose your own adventure''-style narration that allows players to engage with potential futures. We used four design strategies to develop the prototype and conducted three evaluation workshops. We discuss the effectiveness of our chosen design strategies in creating a creative and collaborative gameplay experience.",

abstract = {In this paper, we present the results of a participatory design research project conducted together with the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany. In this collaborative design research project, we set out to create new, location-independent ways of making museums more accessible and approachable to people who would or could not otherwise attend them, in particular those of younger age groups. We present three novel approaches that integrate diverse educational and participatory concepts into the museum visit. All are based on existing technology, allowing for easy and low-cost implementation through cultural institutions. These include a new way of discovering people with whom to attend the museum, a new way of contributing remotely to a collaborative exhibit and a new way of connecting school classes to prepare jointly for a visit to the museum, including a digital co-curation process. We explain our collaborative research and design process and present the results developed in exchange with our project partners and through input from participating users. We conclude by discussing our findings and by outlining future research opportunities.},

abstract = {Visual representations are perhaps the most important mode of human-computer and computer-mediated human-human interaction today. Nevertheless, we suggest, there is a lack of appropriate processes for their design. It seems, designers as much as researchers sometimes assume that visual representations are universally and intuitively comprehensible although evidence suggests otherwise, resulting in suboptimal designs. This article addresses the problem by proposing a human-centered design process for universal and intuitive pictograms. This process is grounded in semiotics, theories of intuitive interaction, and visual perception. Furthermore, it has been validated through empirical research and in practice. The article describes the process, it explains each step, and it provides examples. The result is detailed instructions that other designers, researchers, and businesses can adopt in their projects for designing more suitable visual representations.}

Each scenario is critically reflected. We use speculative scenarios as an evocative way of illustrating future possibilities, beyond the limitations of current technology. We point to future challenges that the research community needs to address, so that shape-changing interfaces can successfully venture out, into people's homes and lives.},

abstract = {We describe a presentation system based on the embodied metaphors of giving presentations: topics are picked up, one goes through a series of points, and comes to a conclusion. Technically, our system is based on body tracking and hand-worn RFID readers. Wearing these readers, users can activate topics in live presentations by picking up RFID-tagged mnemonic objects. Each topic can consist of multiple points, which are mapped to positions on stage. Users can activate a point (and its corresponding slide) by walking up to its position on stage. Various actions, triggered by constellations of handheld objects and movements on stage, are supported by the system. We conducted a series of informal user feedback sessions. Its results indicate that our system has strengths and weaknesses, depending on presenter style and presentation context.},

abstract = {Recipients of phone calls face a constant dilemma between ignoring calls at the possible expense of offending the caller, missing business opportunities or neglecting family members on one hand; and answering them at the expense of interrupting their train of thought or appearing rude and impolite towards others with whom they share a social activity on the other hand. We studied people's attitudes regarding these dilemmas, with emphasis on their social aspects. In a cross-cultural study, conducted in Israel and in Germany, we surveyed both caller and recipient attitudes towards answering mobile phone calls in various circumstances. The study also assessed the aspects of providing contextual information about a call prior to it being answered, including types of information deemed most valuable. The results emphasise the importance of social norms in affecting respondents' attitudes towards making or accepting phone calls regardless of role (caller or recipient), gender or culture. We also found that the norms in the physical context (e.g. being in a meeting) prevailed over norms in the virtual context (e.g. the phone call). Cultural and gender differences did not affect the degree to which people were frustrated by insufficient information regarding the other party's context. However, these factors did affect the suggested design solutions to this problem. The research provides insight into the social aspects of the problem of interruptive mobile phone calls and towards designing applications that help users maintain politeness while handling the caller\textendash{}recipient dilemma.},

We present a number of applications for such an actuation system: Interactive Feedback, User Notification, and Ambient Display. The proposed system is evaluated in a user study, which results point to certain advantages, as well as drawbacks, in comparison to other mobile actuation systems.
We conclude by discussing areas in which tapering-based deformational displays may be used advantageously, and how the proposed system may be improved in the future.},

This project sought to explore life-like behaviour as a means of increasing user's sympathy for everyday objects. We present a prototype that was informally tested with six participants in a situated user test. The results indicate that sympathy and perceived cuteness can arise from life-like movements that, as we propose, represent an object's will of its own. abstract = {In this paper we introduce a new way to interact intimately with an automated system. The Intimate Door Lock investigates the psychological effects of intimate humanhuman interaction being applied to man-machine interfaces. The door lock, in our prototype, is installed at the inside of a domestic front door, and remains locked until given a kiss by its owner. In our prototype, the element to be kissed is a camera-augmented mirror , which we intended to use as a means of lowering the inhibition level. This work is part of a larger series of experiments in the Living Interfaces project, exploring ways in which reduced life-like movements can be beneficial for Human-Machine Interaction.},

It follows a simple approach, lighting one LED for each hour of sleep, and physically resembles the interaction with a conventional hourglass: Tilting the hourglass moves 'time' between its chambers, placing it in an upright position activates it, turning it by 180\textdegree{} snoozes it and placing it horizontally on a surface turns it off.},
